As per the transportation department, the airline has to either keep the ticket on hold for 24 hours, without charges or provide a full refund for cancellation within 24 hours of purchase. Tips to Hold a Flight Ticket for 24-hours on Delta Airlines:

In Delta Airlines, if you hold a reservation and afterward confirm the booking, you might have to pay an extra amount of $25. This amount is included as a Direct Ticketing charge. 

  • If you don't have a SkyMiles account, create it online. 
  • You can make and hold the reservation by contacting the customer support and providing cash or check, instead of any card. 
  • In case you don't want to purchase the ticket, let the booking expire.  
  • If you have decided to make the booking, continue with the SkyMiles Account and use Manage booking to find your trip details.
  • When the itinerary is not there in your SkyMiles account or you could not find it in Manage Trips option, you will have to pay the fee of $25.

If you have made the booking through a travel agent and you wish to hold the reservation, it can also be held only for 24 hours. After 24 hours, holding a reservation will cost them also. So, it is better to book and cancel within 24 hours (if the plan is not confirmed). It will help you with an easy refund.
