What Is the 24-Hour Rule for Flights Cancellations & Changes?

1. Free Cancellation and full refund

Per the airline rules, if a person chooses to cancel a flight that was reserved not more than 24 hours ago, it can be cancelled free of cost. The person should not have to pay a fee to cancel the ticket. The person will also be eligible to get a full fare refund for their ticket. 

2. No-Cost Flight Modification

If someone realizes that they need to alter their itinerary within 24 hours of reserving the ticket, they can request the desired modification from the airline without worrying about the penalty fee. According to the 24-hour rule for flights, no charges will be incurred on the flight modification till 24 hours from the moment of booking. However, one must have to pay the fare difference if any for flight modification. 

3. Hold Reservation 

Some airlines also allow travelers to hold a reservation for 24 hours. This means a person can reserve a ticket without paying the full fare for up to 24 hours. This way, one can hold a good deal for oneself for 24 hours without paying the full amount. Later, the reservation can be confirmed by paying the rest of the amount. 

Conditions & Limitations of 24 Hour Rule for Flights

There are some conditions and limitations as well on the 24-hour rule flights, which are mentioned here:

  • The ticket must have been purchased from the airline at least a week before the flight's boarding. The 24-hour rule will not apply to tickets purchased less than 7 days before the flight's schedule.

  • You must book your flight with the airline directly, either from their site or by contacting the airline's agent. The 24-hour rule may not apply if you book a flight with a third party. 

  • Award flight tickets or reservations through the sales sections also do not fall under the 24-hour rule for flights. This means any cancellation or modification of those tickets will be subject to additional charges. 

  • If a flight ticket is canceled within the 24-hour fare rule, it will be refunded fully. However, the refund medium will depend on the ticket's fare conditions. 

  • The amount paid while holding a reservation at an airline will be forfeited in case of not completing the reservation.
