Carry-On Baggage or Hand Baggage Guide

For both domestic and international travel, the cabin baggage allowance for carriage on all Air India-operated aircraft is as follows.

Dimensions

For Boeing and Airbus airplanes, the height is 55 cms (22 inches) plus the length is 35 cms (14 inches), plus the width is 25 cms (10 inches) for a total of 115 cms.

Economy class

  • Only one piece of hand luggage with a maximum weight of eight kilograms is allowed.
  • Excess weight over the allowable free hand baggage allowance of 8 kg will be charged as shown below beginning November 1, 2019. If your hand luggage weighs more than 10 kilograms, it won't fit in the cabin and must be checked in as registered luggage.

First/ business class

Hand baggage allowance for First and Business Class passengers will be 12 kg per passenger from October 12, 2020. If your hand luggage weighs more than 12 kilograms, it won't fit in the cabin and will have to be checked in as registered baggage.

Domestic

Note:

  • Only Air India-operated flights are eligible for checked baggage allowance, not Air India Express, Alliance Air, or any other Code Share flights.
  • Passengers traveling on Air India domestic flights which connect to Air India international flights or vice versa on the same ticket would be eligible for the International sector's Free Baggage Allowance.
  • In Economy Class, Star Alliance Gold members will continue to be allowed an additional 20kg of baggage allowance.
  • Premium Club and Flying Returns members would continue to be allowed additional baggage beyond the same, as notified from time to time.
  • One folding stroller/carrycot/infant car seat will be provided for each infant.
  • A single piece of luggage can only be 32 kilograms in weight. This policy is in effect across the whole Air India network.

International

Note:

  • Infants in all classes would be entitled to a one-piece, ten-kilogram luggage allowance.
  • A single piece of luggage can only be 32 kilograms in weight. This policy is in effect across the whole Air India network.
  • The free baggage limit for travel in Economy Class between India and Newark(EWR) is 1 piece/23 kg for tickets issued after April 1, 2019.

The concept of a piece

Dimensions of First and Business Class Baggage

  • For each piece, the sum of the three dimensions (length, breadth, and height) must not exceed 62 inches or 158 cm.
  • The maximum weight for a single piece of luggage is 32 kilograms (70 pounds).

Dimensions of Economy Baggage

  • When both pieces are joined together, the sum of their measurements (length, breadth, and height) must not exceed 107 inches. In addition, each piece's linear dimension should not exceed 62 inches.
  • Each bag must not weigh more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds).

Excess Baggage Guide

Excess baggage costs on Air India domestic flights are as follows:

Excess baggage refers to the weight you intend to transport in addition to your free luggage allowance. Furthermore, the cost of additional luggage is determined by the trip route.

In all domestic flights, including Alliance Air, the excess baggage cost is INR 500 plus applicable GST per kg.

Excess baggage costs charged by Air India on international flights are as follows:

  • Oversize Baggage Fee on Air India Between India and the United States:
  1. Bags weighing more than 23 kilograms but less than 32 kilograms have assessed a cost of U.S. $120 per bag. Between India and the United States, a third and each extra piece weighing 23 kilograms (51 pounds) costs $240.
  2. The price for overweight baggage is U.S. $240 if it is an additional component with total linear dimensions of less than 62 inches. As a result, flights to and from Chicago, JFK, EWR, San Francisco, and Washington are included.
  3. If the overall linear dimensions of a bag in the free baggage allowance exceed 62 inches and are within 80 inches, a fine of U.S., $240 is levied. This includes flights to and from Chicago, JFK, EWR, San Francisco, and Washington.
  4. The price for an extra weighing bag that measures between 62 inches and 80 inches in total linear dimensions is the U.S. $480. The following routes are applicable: Chicago/ JFK/ EWR/ San Francisco/ Washington.
  5. Overweighing luggage is included in the free baggage allowance; however, if the overall linear dimensions exceed 80 inches, there is a cost of $720 dollars. Planes flying from and to Chicago, JFK, EWR, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.
  6. The cost is the U.S. $720 if the oversize baggage is checked as an additional piece and exceeds 80 inches in total linear dimensions. Flights to and from Chicago/ JFK/ EWR/ San Francisco/ Washington are also available.

Extra Seat- for the Transportation of Special Luggage in the Cabin

An extra seat can also be reserved for the safe and secure carrying of valuable or fragile items such as diplomatic mail, antiques, antiquities, heirlooms, or non-bulky musical instruments. Small musical instruments are permitted to be carried in the aircraft cabin if they fit within the cabin baggage size and weight limits.

Baggage transport on the seat is subject to the following restrictions:

  • The maximum weight allowed is 165 pounds (75 kg).
  • It must be wrapped or coated in such a way that other consumers are not injured.
  • It has to be secured in the seat next to the driver's seat.
  • To avoid movement during flight, it must be properly secured by a seat belt.
  • Access to the usage of any regular or emergency exit or aisle of the cabin must not be restricted.
  • Customers' views of "seat belt," "no smoking," and "exit" placards must not be obstructed.
  • It can't have any risky things in it.
  • Reservations must be made in advance, and all fees must be paid.

Equipment for sports, music, and other activities

Golfing Supplies

Kits carrying only one golf bag and a pair of shoes will be assessed an excess baggage fee of 6 kilos per kit. Any golf equipment weighing more than 15 kilograms will be charged the standard per-kilogram excess baggage fee.

Skiing Equipment

One set of skis, one pair of boots, or one snowboard, one pair of boots, and one pair of normal water skis may be included in the skiing equipment kit. Any excess baggage fees incurred due to additional ski equipment will be charged, including one set of skis, one pair of boots, one snowboard, one pair of boots, and one pair of normal water skis in the skiing equipment kit. Any excess baggage fees incurred as a result of additional ski equipment will be charged at the standard excess baggage rate.

Kit for angling

The Angling Kit will be classified as 4 kilos of overweight baggage. Any angling gear weighing more kilogram will be charged at the standard excess baggage rate.
